Two kids learning through figures

Communication is essential in every child’s development. But for some children, expressing themselves or understanding certain messages can be a challenge. That’s where pictograms become such a valuable tool: simple images that represent ideas, routines, or instructions in a clear and visual way.

Parents, teachers, and therapists use pictograms every day to support learning, encourage independence, and promote inclusion. The best part? You don’t need to be a designer or tech expert to create them. Thanks to ARASAAC (Aragonese Portal of Augmentative and Alternative Communication), anyone can make customized pictograms quickly and for free.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

1. Go to the ARASAAC website

Visit 👉 https://arasaac.org. From the homepage, you’ll find all the resources.

2. Head to the pictogram section

Click on “Pictograms” to access ARASAAC’s large image library.

3. Use the search bar

Type in a keyword you’re looking for, like “eat”, “play”, or “sleep”. The search tool will display different pictograms related to that word.

4. Browse the results

Take a moment to explore. Some pictograms are very simple, others more detailed. Choose the one that best fits your child’s needs or the context where you’ll use it.

5. Customize your pictogram

One of ARASAAC’s biggest advantages is personalization:

  • Change the background color.

  • Add a caption (like “bedtime”).

  • Select your preferred language.

This way, your pictogram will be even clearer and more helpful.

6. Download and use it

Once you’re happy with your design, click “Download”. The file will save to your device so you can print it, add it to a daily schedule, or use it directly on a tablet or phone.

Why are pictograms so helpful?

Pictograms don’t just support communication - they also:

  • Help children anticipate daily routines (bath, meals, school).

  • Encourage independence.

  • Reduce anxiety in unfamiliar or changing situations.

  • Make understanding easier across different settings (home, school, therapy).

Creating customized pictograms is simple, free, and accessible to everyone. With ARASAAC, parents and professionals can design visual supports that are perfectly tailored to a child’s needs.

Because at the end of the day, communication isn’t only about speaking - it’s about making sure everyone feels understood.

Have you ever used pictograms with your child? What situations have been easier to handle thanks to them? What questions do you still have about their use or creation?

We’d love to hear from you!
